Todd Robinson – Co-Founder of InMotion Hosting

My name is Todd Robinson, CEO & Co-Founder of InMotion Hosting, BoldGrid, and OpenMetal. I am a Southern California native who recently relocated to beautiful Denver, CO with my wife and three children.

Growing up in Southern California I was surrounded by technology and at an early age, I discovered my passion: Computers. I was fascinated by how computers worked, what they could accomplish, and how they could help people.

The Journey Began

My passion for technology and helping others is what led to InMotion Hosting’s creation in early 2001. As we were growing the company and I realized that we could help businesses succeed with the tools we were building in-house.

We started offering enterprise-class digital tools and services to help small businesses at a fraction of the cost. Basically, give small businesses the ability and tools to compete at a higher level.

As we saw our customers grow, we saw Hypergrowth in the Internet, which later on became more accessible and open.

It was a really exciting time to be part of the Internet revolution and extremely interesting to watch accessibility, to software become open.

I realized that WordPress was one of those perfect solutions.

I remember using WordPress from way back when it was first forked from b2. There were two forks: b2evolution(CMS) and WordPress (CMS).

I still know some people who worked on b2evolution. And I have been using WordPress ever since and on all sorts of different projects. WordPress was, and still is, one of the easiest ways to get online.

Throughout the years our mission and vision have not changed, it has only expanded. While our passion will always be to thrill our customers with our expertise, customer service professionalism, and honest desire to see our customers succeed.

When we first started InMotion Hosting we put these mantras in place to ensure we could fulfill our vision of helping other business owners grow their businesses.

To this day it is still in everything we do, build and launch to our customers and the market.

We believe our products are different for several reasons. They are based on open-source philosophy, knowledge, and passion. Even for experts, having help resources readily at hand can be invaluable.

We’re especially proud of the InMotion Hosting Support Center, our knowledge base, which is loaded with hundreds of WordPress articles. And we’re pleased to see other hosting companies matching our efforts in this area.

We’ve also taken the lead in developing unique WordPress solutions. Beyond our optimized WordPress Hosting packages, we have bundled popular software like Elasticsearch into our products.

These are the resources/features that we build over the period of time:

Advice for Business Owners

The advice I would give to anybody who wants to start a business is mentorship.

Based on my experiences and knowledge, I mentor and educate so passionate people can have a clear understanding of the challenges that are ahead, as well as, the education to overcome them.

And when we talk about picking a niche, I think all of them are great! But it evolves around the amount of passion for picking those and starting working on them.

When starting a business, it is important to learn from other businesses and their successes. This can be done by reading articles about businesses on websites like WPfounders and from other blogs and websites.

WordPress & Beyond

I can see in-page editing continuing to gain momentum. The best successes people are seeing is either with Gutenberg or with other editors like BoldGrid, Elementor, and other page builders.

A rich page editing experience will get easier and more accessible to all users. I think you will see a lot more drag-and-drop editing on the theme side as well. Also, I think there will be more “headless” style WordPress sites in the future.

And at InMotion, we are very focused on our next product – Managed WordPress Hosting. With advanced onboarding that walks a user through the correct journey to set up WordPress correctly, easily manage multiple sites, one-click staging to production servers, and time-saving workflows.

Another interesting feature is a one-click installation of a collection of WordPress plugins & themes called Snaps.

People will be able to create or use pre-existing Snaps to launch a WordPress site with everything they need to get up and running quickly.

We are really focused on making WordPress easy for any skill level. At the same time, we’re helping advanced WordPress users automate sophisticated site maintenance and optimization tasks so they can spend more time on their business.

My Love for the WordPress Community

I really love the WordPress community and I love supporting it. From sponsoring WordCamps to InMotion Hosting employees attending virtual and local events; we love being involved.

InMotion Hosting has employees on staff who work on essential teams at WordPress.org and others who volunteer to help in any way, they can from answering support tickets to programming.

We have also developed great relationships with our competitors in the industry.

When we connect with them we discuss WordPress, as well as open source, to help further update our knowledge and keep WordPress and exciting open-source products for all those who utilize it.

I have very good terms with Josepha. She is one of the good people with Automattic that looks out for open source.

How I Keep Myself Updated

Most of all, I enjoy reading the upcoming release rundowns we publish at InMotion Hosting.

We always do a review of the upcoming release and cover the various new features and improvements that we think will be of interest to most users.

You can always grab the beta release about a month or so before the new version arrives and start using it.

That’s a great way to peek at what’s coming up.

I Have a Life Other Than the Work

Apart from my work, I generally spend time with my family, going along with them, and exploring different adventures. The most I like to do ‘Skiing’ which is so satisfying in the snow.

I also have a deep affection for motorcycling and mountain biking with my friends.

My favorite travel destination is ‘Brazil’, I spend quite a lot of time with my family there and with my three handsome cats.

My primary reward is to maintain a healthy work-life balance by spending quality time with my family/friends.
